AB0301 Legal and Ethical Issues in Sustainability

Acad Unit: 3
Pre-requisite: NIL

Course Description:

This course will require students to understand broad sustainability issues involving business and to apply ethical reasoning processes to business issues.

Companies in the pursuit of profit have been implicated in a number of scandals involving corrupt practices, fraud, labour and human rights abuses, and environmental degradation. How can companies ensure that they pay attention to social and environmental issues? How do we as individuals and corporately decide the right thing to do? What role does the law play in holding companies responsible for such scandals?

This course aims to provide students with a good overview of sustainability issues, hard and soft laws applicable as well as the policies that move the enactment of these laws. Students will study these issues from an international and national perspective and will have an appreciation of the roles and limitations of the law in resolving these issues.

As sustainability and CSR issues are gaining recognition in business strategy and execution, this course will devote considerable time examining the measures taken to ensure sustainability. Initiatives such as Global Reporting Initiative, ISO 26000 and United Nations Global Compact will be considered, along with practical examples of corporate implementation or lack thereof. The focus will be on best practices in addressing sustainability/CSR challenges faced by companies.

Business entities which incorporate sustainability practices into their business operations can benefit directly or indirectly, including but not limited to, productivity gains, corporate image, and human capital.
