2011 HURAY GOLD MEDAL AND CASH AWARD FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY


The Recipient: Lesley Cai Wan Ling

Volunteerism has been in her blood since she started doing grassroot projects at the young age of 15. Chairperson of The Frontier Community Club Youth Executive Committee. Some of her community projects include Car Wash Donation at Pioneer and President's Challenge. These activities created awareness of helping the less fortunate and established a platform for youths to embark on future volunteering activities. In addition, Lesley devoted some of her free time volunteering her service at the weekly Meet-the-People-Session in her Lesley has been an active grassroot leader ever since. Currently, she holds the appointment of Vice-constituency where she assist in drafting appeal letters for financial support and advice, on behalf of residents, to the relevant parties in charge. Moreover, she was nominated to take part in 21st IAVE World Youth Conference 2010 and was with CityCare to help with spring cleaning for the elderly's homes. During her internship at PwC, she had the opportunity to engage in a dialogue session with partners on Corporate Social Responsibility. Banking on her expertise in tax and financials taught in NBS, she volunteered to be an IRAS e-Filing volunteer, helping less IT-savvy taxpayers to perform e-filing services.

Ng Shi Hui Kenneth Li Jun Hui Elaine Choong Khoo Yin Peng Edmund

Ng Shi Hui

Shi Hui has been actively involved in the school's Welfare Services Club (WSC) for close to 2 1/2 years. She volunteers regularly at the Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf) and conducts an English course for SADeaf’s beneficiaries.

In her first year with WSC, she chaired the event DEAFinition, which helped to raise awareness of the Deaf community amongst NTU students.

Her strong passion had opened up so many new opportunities for members to help out in what has been done before as well as to start new and fresh projects and events. As the Coordinator of the Regular Service Project for the Hearing Impaired (RSPHI), she led a committee to manage a group of 100 volunteers and organized numerous events with the objective of bettering the lives of the Hearing Impaired. Most notably, she initiated project ‘Deaf as Volunteers’ and it provided a wonderful opportunity for the Deaf to give back to the society.

Kenneth Li Jun Hui

Kenneth started doing volunteering work since Secondary 3 at Renci Old Folk's Home. As he is fluent in dialects, he is able to communicate well with the old folks and he is always grateful to be able to help the less fortunate. While studying in polytechnic, he was the publicity officer for Red Cross Home, and tasked to promote the spirit of volunteerism by organising monthly events for the residents of Red Cross Home. He is also an active volunteer of SPD (Society for the Physically Disabled) for the past 7 years where he had participated and organized many events for the beneficiaries. In addition, he had been a befriender to two disabled children whom he provides regular house visit, support and financial aid to the family. He had also performed in musical plays at Esplanade and Victoria Theatre to help raise funds for charity. For his selfless service and contributions, he was featured in a local documentary by Channel U.

Elaine Choong

Elaine joined NTU's Welfare Services Club (WSC) since joining NTU and it was her passion in helping the less privileged that made her commit whole-heartedly.

During her first year, she took up three positions in three different portfolios in WSC, namely - Publicity and Publications Officer in Camp OutReach, Logistics Officer in Ignite Change and a volunteer in Regular Service Project for the Elderly (RSP Elders).

One of her first projects was Camp OutReach, which was an overseas expedition for the hearing-impaired participants. Despite the participants' hearing impairment, she was able to deal and overcome all obstacles successfully. She also stepped forward to plan and execute activities for the elderly. When she was volunteering at RSP Elders at Asian Women Welfare Association (AWWA) Community Home, she befriended many elders of different backgrounds, personalities and talents. Elaine recently accepted the position of Vice-President in WSC Main Committee and she is eagerly looking forward to every opportunity to improve the stature of the club.

Khoo Yin Peng Edmund

Edmund joined the Welfare Services Club in 2008 as a freshman and has been an active member of the Regular Service Project for the Intellectually Disabled (RSPID) ever since.

In addition to RSPID, he also joined a special project called "Challenge Ur Limits (Curl)". Curl's main objective is to create opportunities for beneficiaries and volunteers to interact and participate in exciting activities that will challenge both their mental and physical limits.

Edmund joined Curl as the events manager and was tasked with the planning and executing of the Curl's main event : "Soaring Hearts, Flying High" in July 2009, which brought together beneficiaries from MINDS, RSPID and public volunteers in a large scale befriending, kite decorating and kite flying session.

In 2009, Edmund took up the position of chairperson of Curl. In that year, they collaborated with the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organizing Committee (SYOGOC) for our event "Coloring Lives, Painting Futures", in which beneficiaries together with their volunteers, designed and personalized traditional clogs and also put up a drumming performance with the clogs they made.

For his involvement in the YOG, Edmund was featured in an article as one of the youths in action for YOG in @NTU magazine in April 2010.
