The Recipient - Liao Wensheng Kelvin

Since entering NTU in 2006, Kelvin has been an active member of the WSC. Volunteering with RSPHI, he began his weekly Saturday tuition at Sadeaf Kallang Centre for the hearing impaired kids from Dec 2006 to Dec 2007. In addition, he performed with fellow volunteers during the Christmas Song Signing 2006 and helped organised the Sparkz Camp 2007 as a Logistic Officer.

Kelvin joined OVE as a volunteer in 2006. He was involved in programme planning and fund-raising activities for the Philippines expedition in July 2007. He then embarked on the 10-Day trip to Philippines and helped out with the house construction, daily morning classes with young children and performance with locals.

Upon returning to Singapore, Kelvin took on the role as Vice Chairperson for OVE 2008 Committee. Kelvin’s duties include managing and leading the Business and Publicity team to make the expedition possible. Throughout the year, he initiated various fund-raising projects, sponsorship and public awareness drive. Under his guidance, the Business team managed to raise one-third of the $25,000 cost of the expedition to Laos and recruited 13 more volunteers for the trip. During the later stages of the planning phase, he also aided in the liaison and programming of the expedition.

During the Laos trip, he showed great organisation ability and initiative especially as he oversaw the successful completion of the construction of the two libraries, pavement and stairway, which are the major projects for the trip. He also conducted the educational activities with great patience and enthusiasm.

Chen Hui Xin Abigail

Member of the Singapore Girl Guides Association

President's Guide Award Winner

Abigail is a member of the Singapore Girl Guides Association and has served the Girl Guides community since her Secondary School days. She acts as a Young Adult Leader who assists the girls in organising and facilitating their activities, such as their Annual Training Camps and Annual Campfires. In addition, she takes up the role as a mentor to her juniors in providing them advices and guidance when they encounter difficulties in life. After being presented the President’s Guide Award, she guides her juniors in developing themselves wholly in various aspects so as to work towards this prestigious award. Having benefited from her involvement in Community Services, she also shares this joy of helping the less fortunate with the girls and encourages them to participate actively. Abigail believes in passing on her knowledge, rendering support to the girls and empowering them to excel in life. Recently, she has been selected to participate in the Young Women’s Leadership Connection (YWLC) mentoring programme. In connection with this, Abigail hopes that she can bring her community involvement to a greater scope.

Lim You Zong Justin

Financial Controller & Business Manager of Regular Service Project for Friends of Children (RSPFOC), NTU Welfare Service Club (WSC)

Justin joined RSPFOC in his 1st year of studies. As a volunteer, he provided tuition and mentoring to Children from Aug 2006 to Aug 2008 for a total period of 2 years at the Whispering Hearts Family Service Centre. The children taught were from lower income families and they were in the Upper Primary section (Primary 3 - Primary 6).

In his 2nd year of studies, Justin undertook the dual role of a Financial Controller and Business Manager of the Friends of Children (FOC) committee for a period of 1 year. His duties included budgeting for various FOC programmes, managing finances for the Regular Service Project and ensuring that volunteer reimbursements were taken care of, as well as looking at various avenues of funding for beneficiary welfare programmes.

Ong Wei Sheng Justin

Volunteer of Regular Service Project for Friends of Children (RSPFOC), NTU Welfare Service Club (WSC)

Being part of RSPFOC (Club Fidentia), Justin tutored and mentored underprivileged secondary school students at Whispering Hearts Family Service Centre. He organised enrichment workshops and outdoor experiential learning for the beneficiaries to guide them to discover the values of friendship, family, communication, self-awareness and group dynamics. He demonstrated his leadership skills and proved to be an effective team player and communicator to yield effective results. In recognition of his contributions, he was promoted to Coordinator, managing over 40 volunteers, and planning and organising weekly sessions as well as large-scale family events such as Zappy Zoo Race. Being committed and keen to improve himself, he received the Certificate of Achievement from the Social Service Training Institute.

Tan Wee Cheng Bryan

Coordinator for Regular Service Project Elders (RSP Elders), NTU Welfare Service Club (WSC)

Bryan joined NTU WSC since Year 1. Every Saturday, he visited Asian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA) Community Home in Ang Mo Kio for his voluntary work under RSP Elders. As a volunteer, he sought to understand the emotional and physical needs of the elderly and aim to alleviate their boredom and loneliness through care and companionship. In Year 2, he became part of the main committee members in WSC and was in charge of the RSP Elders. He was responsible for planning and organising events for the elders in AWWA Community Home. The events include Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration, Christmas Celebration 2007, Chinese New Year Celebration and Dumpling Festival Celebration. He continued to be a regular volunteer in RSP Elders even in his final year of study. Fund raising was also one of the major activities which he had organised. The team managed to raise nearly S$2000 through the  collection of old newspapers which will be used to fund events for the elders at AWWA Community Home to add colours to their lives.

Zhuo Zhicong Zave

Volunteer for the Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF)

Zave’s first involvement was in CCF’s fund-raising event known as ‘Hair for Hope’ in 2007. It is an annual event organised to raise the awareness on childhood cancer. Apart from raising funds, he also helped out in the area of logistics during the event. Zave again volunteered his time for ‘Hair for Hope’ in 2008. He was given the challenging task of communicating with the public where he had to answer queries on the event and manage difficult persons. In addition, Zave volunteered as a Group Leader in CCF’s Family Day 2007, CCF Camp 2007 and 2008, providing leadership and guidance in his appointed group. As he had exhibited tremendous passion in working with young children, Zave was invited to be a part of the Organising Committee for CCF Family Day 2008.

With the objective of creating the awareness of charitable organisations and raising the profile of volunteerism in each of these organisations, Zave planned and hosted an 8 weeks long of radio program via 91.9 FM in Semester 1, AY2008/2009 with the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information. His concept, professionalism and dedication was highly praised by his guests.
