2008 HURAY GOLD MEDAL AND CASH AWARD FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Lee Xi Xun The Recipient: Denise Lee

"I am extremely pleased and delighted to be awarded the Huray Gold Medal and Cash Award for Social Responsibility. It was an unexpected surprise!

I would like to thank Mr Anthony Huray for his generous contribution to this fund in encouraging students to contribute to the community. This award will definitely spur me on to continue my work with the less fortunate in the community.

While this award will serve as a very positive encouragement, nothing beats seeing the smiles on the faces of those whom I work with! I have had the honor of working with the intellectually disabled beneficiaries while serving at the Regular Service Project for the Intellectually Disabled under NTU WSC. These special individuals really have the special gift of making you smile with their innocent and lovable personalities. I am sure many volunteers would agree that no matter which beneficiary group you work with, it is such heartfelt experiences that touch you, and the satisfaction that you gain, which is the best motivating force.

Lastly, I would like to take the opportunity to say that this award does not belong to me alone. Much of my little contribution to community has only been made possible through the wonderful support of my fellow volunteers, wonderful friends and supportive family. One person can only do so much; it is only when we join our hands together that we really can make a difference!

Hope that this award will continue to motivate other individuals to step forward and contribute to community in your own little way. As much as we are helping the less fortunate, we do receive so much more in return too. The life lessons learnt, experiences gained and satisfaction derived really beats having an award anytime!"

Yoke Hing Yoke Hing

Since Year 1, Yoke Hing has been an enthusiast in the Regular Service Program for Elders under the Welfare Social Club- an initiative to help the elderly in the AWWA (AMK branch) Home through volunteer work. Subsequently in Year 2, she became the centre head and managed heavier responsibilities like events planning, proposing constructive changes to the home, coordinating and encouraging new volunteers. Through these, Yoke Hing was able to touch the elderly with her kindheartedness and developed strong rapport with them. Furthermore, she displayed commitment and dedication through her active participation and influence on others in joining her passion. Finally, I will end off with a comment of hers: "I am neither an exceptionally high position holder nor superwoman, however if an average person like me can help to make a more compassionate world, so can anyone.
