Trimester 2 (2008/2009)

I highly recommend NTU for all students considering an exchange programme.  NTU offers the education of a top 25 business school in a tropical climate with a culturally diverse and friendly student population.  Even though I only attended NTU for an 8-week exchange, the good experiences will stay with me for a lifetime as will the friendships I made.

When I arrived in Singapore I was very impressed by the cleanliness and modernity of the downtown.  I quickly realized this is the theme for all of Singapore, including NTU.  I assimilated very quickly into the NTU community.  During my first day, I met several fellow exchange students and was given a thorough tour of the hotspots on campus.  The campus is surprisingly immense but easily navigable.  On the academic side, the courses pose the challenge one would expect from a top business school.  On the non-academic front, NTU, and Singapore in general, also have a lot to offer.

Two important activities to me, outside of school, are eating and playing sports.  NTU offers many options for both.  Just about every type of food is available cheaply on campus (including a sushi buffet), and there are both formal and informal sports options available every day.  One of the highlights is the International Games, which took place at the end of Trimester 2.  Teams are organized by country of origin similar to the Olympics and compete against each other in all kinds of sports.  Joining the team and participating in practices and the tournament was a great way to meet people and build friendships outside of class.

One of my goals for the exchange programme was to meet students with diverse backgrounds and learn about different cultures.  NTU is truly a melting pot, and the students are friendly, so meeting this goal was easy.  I connected with many students I now consider good friends and will stay in contact with in the future.  These are people I went to class with, played sports with, went out with, and traveled with.

My other goal was to travel and see parts of Southeast Asia I had never seen before.  Again, NTU and living in Singapore made this easy.  Singapore is centrally located and air travel is affordable within the region.  The NTU class schedule also helped because I was able to schedule classes from Monday to Thursday, which allowed for 3.5 days’ of travel adventures.  The friends I made within the programme often joined me on these short adventures.
