NBS Focus Point 1: Disruptive Innovation - Implications for Firms
(11.00am to 11.45am)

Current entrepreneurs are having unprecedented challenges. Many sectors were disrupted by technologies from transportation (Uber), hospitality (Airbnb), manufacturing (3D printing) and financial (fintech and virtual currency) sectors.

What can incumbent entrepreneurs do to preempt disruption? Are family-run businesses disadvantaged by a more traditional and conservative perceptive and hence slow to adopt?

Join the following panellists as they share their thoughts on how we can equip ourselves to expect the unexpected:

  • Prof Boh Wai Fong, Head of Division of Information Technology and Operations Management, NBS;
  • Mr Gan Fong Jek, Founding and Managing Partner, Jubilee Capital Management (B.ACC, 1996; M.BUS, 1998)
  • Mr Daryl Neo, Founding Director, DC Frontiers (B.BUS, 2009)
  • Mr Victor Tay, Chief Development Officer, NTU (Moderator)

This has been driven by ubiquitous availability of information and communication technologies.

Such a smart multi energy system is a spring board to transform big data using intelligent algorithms into smart data that will enable complex systems to achieve optimal energy balance with minimal wastage. This smart data can further enhance site operators achieve more accurate predictive and prescriptive maintenance, failure detection and prediction, as well as monetise the assets through real time interactions with the energy market. The interoperability and compatibility with legacy systems is mandatory to fully realise the benefits of system-on-system control platforms.
